The Journey and the Guide

This course offers you the opportunity to explore how to make the most of your life, how to make the most of being human. It is both practical and profound, mixing poetry and myth with down-to-earth instruction. As Maitreyabandhu says “The natural mode of consciousness is to expand. In every moment we can either allow consciousness to unfold or we can make it ‘me’ and ‘mine’ and feel it shrink back to the level of egocentricity. It’s as if we have identified with a tiny ripple on the surface of the ocean. Once we let go of that identification, there’s the whole ocean: centreless, edgeless, completely free.”

This course, based on the book by the same name, is for anyone who wants their life to be a journey, an eight week course in Enlightenment, that will take a lifetime to complete.

triratna-fringe-poster-med-resCome and be gently led through a mindfulness and a cultivation of loving-kindness practice by ordained members of Adelaide’s Triratna Buddhist Community. No experience is necessary.

Mindfulness is a mental state cultivated by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.  It has been a main focus of Buddhist practice for 2,500 years and has recently been more widely adopted as a technique for reducing stress and anxiety and improving focus and clarity of mind.

In the loving-kindness practice we are working with our emotions, learning to enter more fully into positive and enjoyable mental states as well as cultivating a more kindly attitude towards others, which in turn enables us to live more harmoniously with those around us.

There is no fee for these one hour events, but donations are welcome.

Engaged Buddhism – what does this look like and what does it mean to you? 

imageThis is our new theme for Sangha Nights when we resume gathering at 96 Halifax St on Tuesday 10th January. Participants in our sangha will share their thinking, reflection and experiences of ‘engaged Buddhism’, following on our explorations of transforming self and world, through the teachings in the Sutra of Golden Light. From ancient India to contemporary living, how can we best apply the Buddha’s Dharma in the world we live in now?

This will precede Maitripala’s visit to us in February, as part of her Buddhas in my Pocket pilgrimage. She will join us at Sangha Night on 7th February, then lead us in two day workshops the weekend of 11th and 12th, be with us for a second Sangha Night on 14th February, before departing our state on 17th. The theme of the weekend will be along the lines of The world is burning, but what can I possibly do about it?

Note these dates in your new diary now and join us for some stimulating and encouraging discussion to set your course in 2017.

The Drop-In meditation will resume on 10th January also.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASangha happenings in december and beyond

As we move towards the end of the year and 2017, this is what lies ahead for Adelaide Triratna in the coming weeks and months:

Tuesday nights, 29th November, 6th and 13th December we will continue entering the realms of the Sutra of Golden Light.

Our final Sangha Night for 2016 will be 20th December when we will celebrate and give thanks for the Three Jewels with a traditional Sevenfold Puja.

Our End-of-Year gathering will be on Sunday 18th December, from 12 noon onwards, at Ratnadaka and Saddhavijaya’s place in Hazelwood Park.

The Turning-of-the-Year Retreat (see separate email circulated 22nd Nov) will be from Tuesday 27th December through to Tuesday 3rd January.

We will resume Sangha Nights on Tuesday 10th January, 2017.

Maitripala, the Order member from Victoria who is undertaking the Buddhas in My Pocket Pilgrimage, will be with us from 7th – 17th February.

Adelaide Triratna is entering into the Fringe next year ( 17th Feb – 19th Mar) with promotional Drop-In meditations, watch this space for further information.

Reflecting on this time of year and being mindful of choices and decisions we are making about the weeks ahead, here are some inspiring words from the Dalai Lama:
“Let us reflect on what is truly of value in life, what gives meaning to our lives, and set our priorities on the basis of that.”
