What is EcoDharma and EcoSattva?

Come along to Sangha Night next Tuesday, 6th October and learn about the EcoDharma Centre in the Spanish Pyrenees, where Dharmamodini and Keryn spent three amazing days immersed in this wondrous place and space. Hear and see something of the vision of Guhyapati, an Order member who started this project over fifteen years ago.

As described on their website, EcoDharma offers courses and retreats which “support the realisation of our human potential and the development of an ecological consciousness, honouring our mutual belonging within the web of life – drawing on the Buddhist Dharma and the emerging ecological paradigms of our time.”

But this is not just words! This is nature-based living, learning and training, firmly grounded in the commitment and belief that although we live in a time of ecological and social crisis, a truly life-affirming, creative and sustainable future is possible.

This first week in October will introduce our theme for the month, the Urban Ecosattva – what is that and why care?!

Keryn is participating in a new world-wide initiative called EcoSattva training, instigated by a collective of world leaders in deep ecology and Buddhist practice. Over three consecutive weeks, Keryn will share her exploration of what it means to express a Buddhist response to climate change; how we can move from feeling overwhelmed, to responding creatively and kindly, with courage, compassion and wisdom.

And these are not just words either! Commit Tuesday nights in your diary in October and hear and learn for yourself what is truly possible, right here, right now, in urban Adelaide.

As we enter the last three months of the year, this may well be a good time to give yourself the gift of learning to meditate and cultivating awareness, bringing inner calm to your daily living.  Even if you know how to meditate, this seven week course can renew and strengthen your practice.

Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. Buddhist meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity and a calm seeing of the true nature of things.By engaging with a particular meditation practice you learn the patterns and habits of your mind, and the practice offers a means to cultivate new, more positive ways of being.

We teach two meditation practices originally taught by the historical Buddha, the Mindfulness of Breathing and Loving Kindness. Join us this springtime and give yourself and others the gift of calmer, more positive states of being.

Full Moon Puja

One of the foremost challenges in leading a spiritual life is said to be engaging our emotions.  Its easy to decide rationally thats its good to be happy, wise and kind but other levels of our being can tend to pull us in other directions.

In Puja, we have the chance to relax our rational grip and explore an inspiring world of poetry, symbol, music and myth, bringing body speech and mind into our practice in exploring a series of spiritual emotions.

The full moon is traditionally an auspicious time to gather together and mutually honour our highest ideals and aspirations, so if you would like to join us for an evening of meditation, ritual and, of course, tea, then do please come along.

If youre not familiar with the practice of Puja but are curious to know more, be assured there is no pressure to join in or know ‘what happens next’ – all is done in call and response and you are very welcome to join in as you like, or just observe and let the experience wash over you.

Sangha in September

maxresdefault-2This week will be our last evening on our current theme exploring teachings from the Suttas. We will listen to Sangharakshita reading the Kalama Sutta, a famous text that has been described as a  call for free investigation and inquiry. In Bhante’s commentary, he makes the point “the real import of this oft-quoted but much misunderstood passage should be carefully noted”.

Join us tomorrow evening, Tuesday 22nd September, to share in the reading, a talk by Saddhavijaya and group discussion about the Buddha’s instruction to the Kalamas. We will begin, as usual, with meditation at 6.45pm (there is instruction for newcomers in the Drop-In meditation at the same time) and finish by 9.30pm.

Tuesday 29th September we will celebrate the full moon in the tradition of the Buddhist sangha with a seven-fold puja.
