Opening the Heart through Qi Gong and Meditation

Five day retreat (over the Easter period)

You need to feel your heart energy with the whole of your being. To help us come into a more direct experience of our whole being, including the heart, we will be working with Qi Gong movements and the stillness of meditation.

Qi Gong movements work with the physical body and the energetic body. Grounded in our physical body we can work to release blockages in our meridians and allow energy to flow freely within, and into and out of, the body.

We cannot force this kind of relationship and it’s particularly true with the heart. Creating space and a sense of openness we can allow the heart to reveal itself. This is also a beautiful practice in ksanti, patience.

Setting up the most supportive conditions for ourselves is important. Please feel free to bring along any readings, poems, photos, drawings etc. that hold a heart connection for you.

The movements of Qi Gong are suitable for everyone and can easily be adapted where needed. No previous experience necessary.

Mindfully Alive is the theme of our Turning-of-the-Year Retreat, based on the Satipatthana Sutta, the direct path to realisation. This will be the foundation for mindfully exploring our experience over the seven days of this retreat, led by Maitripala from Victoria.

Maitripala visited Adelaide Triratna in February as part of her Buddhas-in-my-Pocket pilgrimage and she has kindly and generously organised her time and her life, so she can come back to South Australia and lead us in this wondrous text and practice.

According to the Buddha’s teaching, there is no limit to the human mind, nothing is beyond its reach. Mind in Harmony is the title of a book written by Subhuti, a senior Order member and teacher in Triratna. The material contained therein comes out of his life-long experience of communicating the Dharma, and in particular the Yogacara Abhidharma, through giving talks and leading retreats in Europe, the US and India.

Subhuti dedicates the book first and foremost to his teacher, Urgyen Sangharakshita, who himself published Know Your Mind, an accessible introduction to Buddhist psychology. Both books are described as eminently practical guides to the system of mind training to be found in the classical Abhidharma material.

Join us as autumn unfolds into winter to explore ways of engaging directly with your mind, to unlock its potential and develop the means to live a happier and more fruitful life.

We gather every Tuesday evening at 96 Halifax St in the city, starting at 6.45pm with meditation (there is also guided meditation for newcomers), followed by a tea break and then time exploring our theme, concluding at 9.15pm.

The Alchemy of Love: entering the realms of the brahma viharas

This is our new theme for Sangha Nights, commencing next Tuesday 21st February. The four brahma viharas, or sublime abodes, are metta, karuna, mudita and upeksa, that is, loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity. We are going to follow the threads of discussion and exploration that have been taking shape through the past weeks and encourage ourselves to go deeper with this revolutionary approach to meditation and living our lives. Alchemy – turning base metal into gold; this can be us, opening to the inner depths of our being, giving rise to beauty and kindness in the face of suffering and joy alike.

Please Note: a drop-in meditation class is available every week at the same place and time, 6.45pm, for those interested to learn about meditation or refresh their practice. There is no cost for these sessions, simply a contribution according to means, the Buddhist practice of dana or generosity.

This is an annual festival in the Buddhist calendar, when we commemorate the historical Buddha’s death. We give thanks for the gift of the Three Jewels and reflect on our own journeying with the Dharma and spiritual death and rebirth.

We also reflect on the certainty of our own death and bring to mind other sentient beings who have shared with us the preciousness of this life and have died in the past twelve months. Bring a photo or symbol you can offer to the shrine in honour of those passed from this life.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by what is happening all around the world on any parameter you dare to think of – politics, environment, economics, gender, race, class and so it goes on and on. How can we best live a Dharma life in the midst of so much turmoil, conflict and suffering?

Join us for this weekend of exploring the teachings, to find out more about yourself and your relationship to unsatisfactoriness and compassion. Metta is a necessary first ingredient for effectively connecting with compassion. Maitripala will lead us through experiential learning that has enabled her to undertake the Buddhas-in-my-Pocket pilgrimage this past year and will enable us to go deeper in ourselves and with others.

The content of these two day retreat/workshops flows on one from the other, but each day can also be meaningfully participated in, without attending the other day.
